Currently showing at NYC”s Richard Heller Gallery is an exhibition of new works by New York based artist Firelei Báez, ’Not Even Unalterable Limitations.’ Tackling cultural and gender identity in a strikingly odd way, the beauty of the works lies in the poignant details; the towering headdresses of fauna, a heeled shoe on furred legs, and geographical tattoos that snake up a thick thigh. The convergence of these strange females with animalistic features suggests a kind of focus on our basic instincts and yet the cultural costuming deepens the narrative to encompass the complexity of personal indentity.
